Assessment of Heavy Metal Contamination and Macro-nutrient Content of Composts for Environmental Pollution Control in Ghana
نویسندگان
چکیده
This study examined macro-nutrient content of solid waste compost to determine the potential of the compost for soil fertility amelioration in Ghana. Heavy metal concentrations in the compost were also examined to assess the potential health implication of compost application in urban and peri-urban agriculture. It was observed that the overall NPK concentration was low in the different compost types, but generally, total N and K were greater in agricultural waste compost compared to municipal solid waste (MSW) composts. The agricultural waste compost was also richer in organic carbon. In terms of toxicity concerns, heavy metals concentrations (Ni, Zn, Cu and Cd) were generally low in the different types of composts and within permissible Australian standards for compost products. However, lead (Pb) concentration in mixed MSW composts was significantly high in the dry season, exceeding the Australian limit of 150 mg/kg Pb, required for unrestricted compost use. There was considerable seasonal variation in the heavy metal levels in the composts made from open windrows process, with reduced levels in the rainy season. It appeared that seasons affected mixed waste characteristics, which affected compost quality. It was therefore concluded that seasons and composting processes, to some extent, were important determinants of the levels of toxic metal concentrations in final compost products in Ghana.

Heavy Metal Pollution from Dental Clinics–Part 1:Annual Emissions Assessment
This study aimed to evaluate the concentration of heavy metals in liquid effluents and to quantify the mercury content in dental amalgam waste generated by dental clinics. Three neighbouring cities in Northeast Algeria were considered in this study (Constantine, Skikda, and Annaba). Heavy metals, such as Hg, Cu, Zn, Fe, Ni, Mn, Cr, Cd, and Pb, were analysed in wastewater and then compared with ...
متن کاملSpatial distribution and degree of heavy metal pollution in urban roadside dusts from Sanandaj, Iran
Industrial activities and high traffic density are the most important heavy metal pollution sources in urban areas. Roadside dust created by atmospheric deposition can be one of the best indicators for heavy metal contamination levels. The present study reports the spatial distribution patterns and degree of heavy metal pollution (Cd, Cr, Ni, Pb, Zn, and As) in 50 roadside dust samples from urb...

متن کاملGroundwater quality assessment using the water quality pollution indices in Toyserkan Plain
Background: Iran is located within the dry and semi dry regions, thus almost 90% of the required water is secured via the use of groundwater. Owing to the increasing pollution of water resources, this study was performed to evaluate water quality pollution indices for heavy metals (As, Zn, Pb and Cu) contamination monitoring in Toyserkan Plain during spring and summer in 2012. Methods: A tot...
متن کاملAssessment of Heavy Metal Contamination in Topsoil of Northern Coasts of Persian Gulf
Persian Gulf and its coastal areas are the world's largest source of crude oil and related industries govern the region. One of the contaminants in this area is heavy metals associated with oil spill. More importantly, vanadium, nickel and zinc can be named in this regard. In this study, the contamination of northern coasts of Persian Gulf is selected to investigate for trace metals of V, Ni, C...
